Because of this concern, few women succeeded in cross-dressing and even fewer were rewarded for their gender change.Ĭatalina de Erauso was one of the most famous women to successfully live most of her life as a man. Many men felt threatened by women who cross-dressed because if some women were able to gain control over their lives and live as men did, other women could then get the wrong idea and expect equality between the genders. Over time, however, multiple women challenged this divide by dressing as men which called into question the supposedly strict gender norms that were created to keep people in their place. As Leon Battista Alberti described in great detail, it was a woman’s job to guard and take care of the house and children while men were in charge of the finances of the household (Alberti 207). This created a clear separation between the actions that defined being a man versus those that defined being a woman. ![]() The patriarchal society of early modern Europe held the expectation that women should be obedient, humble, and virtuous while men were expected to be brave and forceful. ![]()
